Group C takes centre stage at the CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Monday as Niger face Guinea and hosts Uganda tackle Algeria.
Both fixtures will be played at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, Uganda.
At the 2022 CHAN tournament in Algeria, Niger exceeded expectations, reaching the semi-finals. Ultimately, the Ménas fell short of a spot on the podium, losing 1-0 to Madagascar in the third-place playoff. In their fifth appearance at the competition, Niger will hope to better its last result and shock the continent once again.
In three previous CHAN appearances, Guinea has advanced to the semi-finals twice, in both 2016 and 2020. The nation secured the bronze medal in 2020 but failed to qualify for the 2022 edition. Now returning to the continental stage, Syli Nationale will attempt to return to the podium.
Uganda is the last of the three host nations to begin its CHAN campaign and will aim to join Tanzania and Kenya on three points. The Cranes have participated in every CHAN tournament apart from the inaugural edition, but have not managed to escape the competition’s group stage. Playing on home soil, the Cranes will look to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time.
Algeria have only played in two prior CHAN tournaments. In 2011, the nation finished fourth, narrowly missing out on the bronze medal to the tournament’s host, Sudan. 11 years later, Algeria hosted the tournament and came close to claiming top honours but lost on penalties to Senegal in the final. Now playing Uganda on Ugandan soil, The Desert Foxes will hope to begin their campaign with a bang.
