Olivia Rodrigo releases The Cure covers featuring Robert Smith

Olivia Rodrigo has released her versions of The Cure’s ‘Friday, I’m In Love’ and ‘Just Like Heaven’, which she performed with Robert Smith at Glastonbury Festival, on Spotify.

The American star delivered a storming headline set on the Pyramid Stage as this year’s closing act of the Worthy Farm festival, and alongside performing her hits such as ‘Traitor’ and ‘Good 4 U’, she invited her “hero”, Smith, on stage to perform the two classics from The Cure.

Rodrigo largely has a Gen-Z fanbase as her core followers, but her increasing number of appearances with classic indie rock legends, such as Smith, has garnered her a newfound appreciation among older audiences who grew up worshipping bands such as The Cure.

To this end, at the time of her Glastonbury appearance, the singer called Smith “the coolest, nicest, most wonderful man in the world. And I’m so honoured to play with him.”

In a review of her headline set at Glastonbury, Far Out wrote: “On the Glastonbury stage, as she emerges for her Sunday night headline slot at only 22, making her the second youngest after Billie Eilish, who was 20, it begins as a rock show through and through. Within moments, fireworks are cracking, flames are flying, and her all-female band pack a raging punch during ‘Obsessed’. “

Meanwhile, last week, Talking Heads frontman David Byrne, who performed with Rodrigo at Governors Ball in New York in June, recently heaped praise on the 22-year-old pop star.

He recalled how the pair came to collaborate that night as he said in an interview with Jimmy Fallon: “I saw her show here at Madison Square Garden and met her — I’m a fan. And she stayed in touch. She said, ‘Hey, wanna join me?’”

The ‘Burning Down the House’ singer added: “She has a great relationship with her audience. Not only do they know the songs, they mean something to them.”
