Mississippi State is off to an excellent 3-0 start this season, defeating Southern Miss 34-17, Arizona State 24-20, and Alcorn State 63-0. In the win over the Sun Devils, the Bulldogs were led by quarterback Blake Shapen, who connected on 19 of 33 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns. Brennan Thompson was unstoppable in the win, catching six passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns.

Northern Illinois, meanwhile, is 1-1 this season. The Huskies defeated Holy Cross 19-17 to open the season. In the win, Chavon Wright carried the ball 11 times for 77 yards and one touchdown. Northern Illinois then put up a valiant effort but wound up losing 20-9 to Maryland in its second matchup of the season.
