Paris Saint-Germain claimed a dramatic 2-1 road win over Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, Oct. 1 with Gonçalo Ramos’ 90th-minute goal settling a wide-open game.
Despite both teams dealing with some major absences, fans at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys — a venue Barcelona didn’t initially plan to play this match in, only for ongoing renovations at the Camp Nou to force their hand — got a high-level game packed with chances.
Ferran Torres opened the scoring in the 19th minute for the hosts, capping off a scintillating sequence involving passes from Lamine Yamal, Pedri, and Marcus Rashford. However, PSG youngster Senny Mayulu equalized in the 38th minute, tucking home a 19-yard shot after an excellent surge forward from defender Nuno Mendes.
Barcelona had a viable argument for Mendes to receive a second yellow card after tripping Yamal in the second half, but ultimately referee Michael Oliver let the Portugal international stay in the match. That may have proven decisive, with PSG’s late push for a goal eventually paying off.
Substitute Lee Kang-in’s late shot cracked off the post at one point, but Ramos made sure the French titans took home the three points with a late strike that punished Barcelona’s high defensive line.
The result sees PSG climb into a six-way tie for first after two rounds of Champions League matches, alongside big names like Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Arsenal. The sixth team in the group? Qarabag, the underdogs from Azerbaijan who defeated FC Copenhagen earlier on Wednesday.
Here are Barcelona vs. PSG highlights and updates from this Champions League clash.

It’s full time, and PSG has stunned Barcelona with a late, late game-winner.
A wide-open game ended with Gonçalo Ramos’ confident finish in the 90th minute, a goal that VAR and the semi-automated offside system declared onside by a matter of a few inches.
You can’t say PSG didn’t deserve something in the end, as Lee Kang-in nearly had a spectacular goal just a few minutes earlier. Still, Barcelona will raise some issues after Nuno Mendes avoided a second yellow card for bringing down Lamine Yamal in a promising spot.
Paris Saint-Germain seems to have grabbed a stunning late goal, with Gonçalo Ramos tucking away a huge chance in the 90th minute.
Barcelona’s high line wasn’t coordinated, and PSG easily broke through the offside trap. Ramos’ position is very, very close to being offside, but a VAR check changes nothing.
2-1 PSG as stoppage time begins.
Eric García is the fifth and presumably final Barcelona player to come off, with Andreas Christiansen stepping in to replace him at center back.
This might be a signal that Barcelona is worried about defending a PSG side that — with Gonçalo Ramos lurking — has become more dangerous in the air.
Lee Kang-in nearly proved to be an inspired substitution, with the South Korean slicing through Barcelona in the 83rd minute.
It looked like a potentially magic game-winner, but Lee’s powerful shot thumped off the far post and away from danger.
Barcelona have substituted one of their stars, with midfielder Pedri being replaced by academy product Marc Bernal.
Meanwhile, PSG makes two moves, sending Lee Kang-in and Quentin Ndjantou on for Bradley Barcola and Senny Mayulu in the 81st minute.
Paris Saint-Germain has made another change, sending on Portugal striker Gonçalo Ramos for Fabián Ruiz in the 73rd minute.
Ruiz had signaled to the bench that he might need to come off after an attempted shot a couple of minutes prior to the change.
Following PSG’s substitution, Hansi Flick didn’t wait too long to bring on fresh legs of his own.
Robert Lewandowski, Marc Casadó, and Alejandro Baldé have entered the fray in the 72nd minute, replacing Dani Olmo, Marcus Rashford, and Gerard Martín. That should push Ferran Torres wide, with Lewandowski taking over as the center forward.
Ibrahim Mbaye is the first player to be substituted, with Luis Enrique bringing on Lucas Hernández. That change sees Nuno Mendes move up to a left forward role, with Hernández taking over at left back.
Paris Saint-Germain captain Achraf Hakimi just saved a seemingly sure goal in the 64th minute.
Barcelona ripped the PSG defense apart, and Dani Olmo surely thought he had a goal as his shot flew past goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier. However, Hakimi appeared seemingly out of nowhere to block the shot before it could fly into the empty net.
Lamine Yamal was gliding towards goal in the 61st minute, before tumbling to the grass right on the edge of the PSG box after Nuno Mendes’ challenge.
There’s a lot at play here: is it a penalty kick? Should Mendes get a second yellow card? Based on certain replay angles, PSG’s protests that it isn’t even a foul have at least some merit.
In the end, no one is particularly happy. Barcelona gets a free kick rather than a penalty, Mendes doesn’t get the second yellow, and Yamal eventually scooped the dead ball well over the bar.
Barcelona kicks the second half off, with no substitutions for either side.
We’ll see if the tempo and quality of play can keep up with what we saw in the first half.
That was something else. Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain may be missing some key players, but the youngsters stepping in have been superb, and this 1-1 game has been a thriller throughout the opening 45 minutes.
Ferran Torres and Senny Mayulu have the goals, and both teams are truly going for it. That points to the second half being a (highly dramatic) treat.
Paris Saint-Germain is level after 38 minutes, with teenager Senny Mayulu firing home to make it 1-1.
The bulk of the credit on the goal has to go to Nuno Mendes, whose storming run from left back ended with a pass to Mayulu. Still, the 19-year-old did well to escape his marker and tuck his 19-yard shot into the bottom corner.
We have a high-tempo game here, and now Barcelona is looking for a penalty kick after Eric García ended up in a heap following a collision with PSG’s Illia Zabarnyi.
The crowd wants the call more than the players, and after about 30 seconds the VAR check ends with no penalty given.
A rare Vitinha turnover hands Barcelona possession inside the PSG half, and the hosts look superb from there.
A series of quick passes between Lamine Yamal, Pedri, and Marcus Rashford ends with the England attacker slipping a ball in for Ferran Torres to slide home a 19th-minute opener.
Sometime after announcing their starting lineup and before kickoff, Paris Saint-Germain made a change to their squad.
João Neves, who was named in Luis Enrique’s 11, is not on the field, while Warren Zaïre-Emery (initially listed among the substitutes) is in. It’s not clear what has happened at this time, but in all likelihood Neves experienced some kind of injury during the warm-up.
While he’s not on the field to start, U.S. men’s national team fans will be on high alert in case 19-year-old Diego Kochen is called upon by Barcelona.
The Miami native has spent the last two seasons with Barcelona’s B team, which plays in the Spanish third division, but has largely been with the first team during this campaign.
Kochen was named to the U.S. Under-20 World Cup squad, but Barcelona recalled the goalkeeper after an injury to starter Joan García.
With Marc-André ter Stegen out due to a longer-term injury as well, Barcelona have started veteran Wojciech Szczęsny in this match. Kochen isn’t the only back-up goalkeeper in uniform, with 18-year-old Eder Aller also given a spot on the bench by Hansi Flick, but it is expected that Kochen would get the call should something happen to Szczęsny.
If he did take the field, Kochen would not be the first American to play a competitive match for Barcelona. Most notably, Sergiño Dest was on the club’s books from 2020-24, appearing 51 times.
Paris Saint-Germain goes long straight from the kickoff as this big-time Champions League match gets underway.
