Cardinals coach turns heads with ‘when our QB went to jail’ reply

Arizona Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon made waves on Oct. 15 for the way he ended his media availability.

Gannon was asked: “How early in your career did you have to start trying to figure out how to take the emotion out of coaching as far as when you have all these injuries and you have all these pieces, when’s the first time that you can recall that?”

The Cardinals coach’s response was immediate and to the point: “2007, when our quarterback went to jail.”

Gannon then got up from his seat to end the media session, amid receiving a “coach, thank you” for his answer.

Yes, that was it.

‘When our quarterback went to jail’? Context for Gannon’s comment

You may be wondering which QB Gannon was referencing in his comment.

The answer? Michael Vick.

Gannon was a defensive quality control coach with the Atlanta Falcons in 2007, and even though he helped coach on the opposite side of the ball, the arrest must have affected the coach, judging by his answer to the question.

It would have been great to get some follow-up questions, but Gannon stood up, ending the availability with the media.

Another Michael Vick reference for Arizona Cardinals

Interestingly, it was the second time Michael Vick has come up with the Cardinals in recent weeks.

Last month, Kyler Murray received backlash over a post with a Michael Vick jersey and a dog.

Murray deleted the post and told reporters on Sept. 17: “In no way, shape or form do I condone animal cruelty or dog fighting, whatever it is. For me, personally, y’all saw me wear the Michael Vick jersey, a player that I admired very much growing up.

“Being home with my pup, my dogs Trunks and Swoosh get treated like kings, so it’s not like in no way, shape or form do I condone that. I saw how it affected people and decided to take it down.”
