AFC Champions League: Al-Shorta faces Saudi Al-Ittihad in crucial Baghdad clash

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi capital is set to host a pivotal AFC Champions League 2 match tonight, Monday (October 20, 2025), as Al-Shorta FC (The Green Guitar) takes on its formidable guest, Al-Ittihad FC of Saudi Arabia. The Group B match, which kicks off at 7:00 PM at the Al-Madina International Stadium, is a crucial fixture for the Iraqi side’s continental ambitions.

Al-Shorta enters the third round seeking its first victory in the tournament, having secured one point from a draw against Qatar’s Al-Sadd and a loss against Al-Gharafa. The team is counting on its high technical readiness and intensive preparations to secure a positive result that will satisfy its large fanbase and revive its hopes of advancing from the tough group.

Technical analyst Rafid Salem suggests that Al-Shorta’s chances of advancing are stronger than Al-Ittihad’s. Salem pointed out that the Saudi club has lost both of its previous matches and is also struggling in its domestic league.

Crucially, Al-Ittihad will be without star striker Karim Benzema, who is reportedly absent from the squad. Salem emphasized that Al-Ittihad’s attacking strategy is heavily reliant on the French forward, and his absence significantly benefits Al-Shorta’s tactical positioning.

The analyst noted that while the group is challenging, Al-Shorta has a strong opportunity if it maintains its performance level and plays without pressure. Securing three points at home against a strong international side like Al-Ittihad would be instrumental in boosting Al-Shorta’s chances of progressing from the group stage.
