Did Brock Purdy fuel national narrative? – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

The 49ers gave their fans reason to cheer with a season-opening victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

They also gave their fans plenty of opportunities to second-guess, agonize and complain even with their 17-13 Week 1 road victory.

In other words, it was darn-near the perfect scenario for the first edition of 49ers Overreactions for the 2025 season.

We went to social media (Twitter/X) to see how fans were reacting (or overreacting) to the 49ers’ fourth consecutive road victory against the Seahawks.

And this is the result:

Purdy played a perfect game for the national media’s narrative about him. (H)e threw two picks and almost had a third in the end zone (@MPH09FC)

Overreaction: No.

There is no way a legitimate critic of Brock Purdy would have instantly become a fan after watching the 49ers’ Week 1 game.

Purdy threw two interceptions. He did not get one pass high enough to clear the grasp of linebacker Ernest Jones IV in the third quarter. And he threw into coverage on a pass that Josh Jobe picked off in the fourth quarter.

And, take your pick: Purdy either made a too-risky pass or gave his third-string tight end Jake Tonges the chance to make a play.

In any event, Tonges bailed Purdy out with a remarkable game-winning touchdown catch that he ripped from the grasp of Seahawks defensive back Riq Woolen.

Purdy did not have a great game, but the 49ers still pulled off a road win within the division. And that ain’t bad.

Brock Purdy is a bonafide clutch QB. And the standard he has to maintain to receive rightful praise is significantly higher than that of any other QB in the league. (@HardenBeard)

Overreaction: No.

Both things can be true. Haters remain unimpressed. And Purdy continues to get results.

Yes, it does seem as if Purdy is held to an unusually high standard in which any imperfection — real or imagined — is fodder for the hot-take crowd.

With his two interceptions were also two touchdown passes.

And his 45-yard perfectly thrown pass to Ricky Pearsall set up the game-winning touchdown. It was a huge play at a perfect time on the all-or-nothing final drive.

There’s no denying he made some clutch plays and was the better quarterback on the field in Seattle.

Dee Winters will be All Pro (@ShawnSummer)

Overreaction: Yes.

We mean this as no disrespect to Dee Winters because being named an All-Pro is such a high bar to clear. That is a distinction that is reserved for the very best of the best.

That said, Winters had a very strong showing against the Seahawks. He had the best game of his career. That kind of performance should be expected at the opening of his third season in the NFL.

Winter registered six tackles and had two tackles for loss. He might not be quite at the level of a healthy Dre Greenlaw right now, but he’s getting closer.

Kyle Shanahan has the worst special teams of any HC in NFL history who’s coached more than 2 seasons (@bushwoodgc)

Overreaction: No.

Yes, we realize this is complete hyperbole, but we’re going to play along on this one.

The 49ers’ special teams were bad last year, and there was no evidence on Sunday that they have improved that phase of the game.

Robert Saleh is the most important coach on the team and will be the next 49ers head coach (@Canadian_49er)

Overreaction: No and yes.

With so many young players on defense, Robert Saleh has the most important job on the coaching staff. His title is defensive coordinator. In reality, he is the head coach of the defense.

Saleh got great results Sunday from a defense that had three rookies in key roles and two others as important rotational players.

Saleh made the pieces fit, as the 49ers’ defense did a great job against the run and the pass.

He will get a second chance to be an NFL head coach.

However, it is extremely doubtful it will be with the 49ers.

Shanahan enters his ninth season as head coach. He does not appear to be going anywhere anytime soon.

Meanwhile, Saleh could very well be at the top of the list when it comes to the next coach-hiring cycle in January.

As much as the 49ers would like to keep him around for a long time, that might be impossible.
